Summary : The site of a possible Roman temporary camp, visible as faint cropmarks on aerial photographs taken in 1949 and 1995, and mapped by English Heritage's Hadrian's Wall NMP. The marks comprise a discontinuous straight ditch with curved corners at its southern and northern ends. The ditch is located immediately to the west of White Moss camp 2 and overlaps the north west corner of camp 1. |
More information : NY 4555 6036. Possible traces of a Roman temporary camp are visible as faint cropmarks on aerial photographs taken in 1949 and 1995, and have been mapped by English Heritage's Hadrian's Wall NMP. The marks comprise a discontinuous straight ditch with curved corners at its southern and northern ends, suggesting a temporary camp whose western side is 89 metres long. The possible southern side is visible for about 45 metres. The ditch is located immediately to the west of White Moss camp 2 (NY 46 SE 31; UID 909916) and overlaps the north west corner of camp 1 (NY 46 SE 17; UID 11626). (1-2)
