Summary : The Gwyer family obelisk in Arnos Vale Cemetery is a granite obelisk on a stepped base, surrounded by cast iron railings. Inscriptions in sunken capitals are present on the sides of the obelisk. The railings are of exceptional elaborateness, having baluster shafts and anthemion finials to the rails; the corner posts have Grecian foliate spearheads. The earliest death commemorated was of Matthew Wright Gwyer, who drowned off St. Vincent in the West Indies in 1842. |
