A Dutch print depicts the Raid on the Medway with a key to the action. No.13 shows "2 Groote Eng. gesoncken schepen by de Kettingh" ("Two great English ships sunk by the chain") which would appear to reference the MARMADUKE and NORWAY MERCHANT. (2)
Secondary sources:
It was resolved to sink the MARMADUKE, SANCTA MARIA and NORWAY MERCHANT to reinforce the chain.
'...the MARMADUKE and the NORWAY MERCHANT, which had been taken down to the chain without mishap, were sunk there about 8am on Wednesday.'
In an account of 17 August 1667 sent to Pepys (Rawlinson MS A.195, ff106-7), the NORWAY MERCHANT was valued at £1,400, since she had been fitted out and victualled for a voyage. (1)
