Summary : Hough End playing fields, laid out in 1945, was known as the Alexandra Park airfield from 1918-29. Alexandra Park accepted Manchester's first ever civil flight, from Oxford, in May 1919. The Lancashire Aero Club also formed at Alexandra Park, in 1922. Had Manchester Corporation been successful in persuading Lord Egerton of Tatton to sell the land, Alexandra Park would have become Britain's first municipal airport. Instead, it remained undeveloped until it was laid out as Hough End playing fields. The Corporation, meanwhile, found an alternative site across the border in Salford, at Barton. |
