Summary : A World War Two Pickett Hamilton Fort at Stapleford Aerodrome (the former RAF Stapleford Tawney). The Pickett Hamilton fort was a special kind of small pillbox built of concrete and steel, which could be retracted by means of hydraulics to the level of the surrounding ground so as not to obstruct aircraft. This example has been turned upside down; the access steps and pump were however still in situ in 1997. The installation is thought to have been constructed betweeen 1940 and 1941.
More information : A World War Two Pickett Hamilton Fort at the former RAF Stapleford Tawney airfield, Stapleford Abbots, Essex, TQ 489 967. This example has been turned upside down; the access steps and pump were however still in situ in 1997. Its general condition, noted on a field visit made in conjunction with Defence of Britain Project in that year, was said to be good. The installation is thought to have been constructed betweeen 1940 and 1941.(1)
