Summary : Wharfedale Union Workhouse was built in 1871-3 to designs by C. S. and A. J. Nelson of Leeds and Derby. The original infirmary was replaced in 1905-7 by a new design by W. H. Herbert Marten of Ilkley and Bradford. Seven hutted wards were added in 1940, which have been identified on 1940s aerial photographs. These were used to treat and accommodate people from the nearby Prisoner of War camp. The main block, now (2005) a nurses' home, is a symmetrical two-storey, linear structure built in local sandstone. A clock tower surmounted the principal entrance, and the wings either side were divided into male and female patient accommodation. It is Grade II listed. The design is similar to that of St. Mary's Hospital, Armley, Leeds (the former Bramley Union Workhouse) which was designed by the same architects in 1871-2. |
