More information : The Defence of Britain database notes a World War Two type 22 pillbox at Ouston Airfield "near Harlow Hill", NZ 069 699. It was said to be extant but the exact condition was unknown. The suggested date for construction was given as 1940-1941. The record is undated, but was presumably made between the mid 1990s and 2001, when the database was compiled. The parish in which the pillbox is located is given as "Harlow Hill" (sic: see source 2 below). (1)
The locational information given in the Defence of Britain Database is misleading: if the NGR in source 1 is correct then it is about 1500 yards north-west of Harlow Hill. The Civil Parish in which the NGR falls is Stamfordham, which also contains Harlow Hill. (2)
NZ 069 699. Described as polygonal, constructed out of a mixture of materials, i.e brick or stone with concrete, and facing east. (3)
Located west of the airfield in a position south of the T-junction of the B6309 and an unclassified road leading to the west. This position would be consistent with a pillbox commanding both the road and a view of the airfield. (4)
