Summary : Bideford Union Workhouse was built in 1837 to designs by George Gilbert Scott and William Bonython Moffatt. An isolation block had been added by 1886 and a new infirmary, designed by R T Hookway and Sons, was added in 1903. This was enlarged in 1911. A new kitchen block and laundry were also added in 1903. In 1930, the workhouse became a Public Assistance Institution known as 'The Whitehouse'. The buildings are rendered with slate roofs. The entrance range, main workhouse range, kitchen block, isolation block and infirmary are still extant and were part of Torridge Hospital at the time of a RCHME (Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England) survey in 1992. By 2007, they had been converted into residential use as Westcroft Court and were Grade II listed. |
