A trench containing human bones was discovered in cica 1818, whilst draining, at the foot of an eminence in Horse Close, which is the first field west of Branxton village. Some years later, a further burial pit was found in the churchyard (NT89223748), where also a number of Mediaeval silver coins have come to light. The remains are considered to be victims of the Battle of Flodden Field, 1513. (2)
