Summary : Several Roman inscribed stones were found between Milecastle 49 and Turret 49a in 1958 during conservation work by Department of Environment (IAM). (Measurements are taken from the west wall of the milecastle):- At somewhere west of the milecastle on a stone dump, reading POMPEI AEMILIANI PXXX and under similar circumstances reading MARCI RVFI. At 515 ft, COH VII ATILI NATALIS. Two more building stones were found in 1959, one between Milecastle 49 and Turret 49a and the other at a point 135 yds west of the west wall of Milecastle 49. Inscriptions as follows: COH VII I INANA and X. |
More information : (NY 619664) Five inscribed stones were found between Milestone 49 and Turret 49a in 1958 during conservation work by Department of Environment (IAM). (Measurements are taken from the west wall of the milecastle):- a. At somewhere west of the milecastle on a stone dump, reading POMPEI AEMILIANI PXXX. b. Found under similar circumstances to a. reading MARCI RVFI. c. At 206 ft, MARCI RVFI as b. above. d. At 222 ft, CARI SCIPIO. e. At 515 ft, COH VII ATILI NATALIS. (1)
