Summary : A World War Two type 22 pillbox at North Weald Airfield. The hexagonal concrete pillbox may have been built 1940-1941. It features a full height protected entrance, internal ricochet wall and embrasures protected by steel plates. The airfield is considered to be important partly because of the survival of its defensive landscape, of which this pillbox forms a part. |
More information : A World War Two type 22 pillbox at North Weald Airfield, North Weald Bassett, Essex, TL 4943 0461. The construction date of the pillbox is suggested to be 1940-1941. It is built of concrete. It features a full height protected entrance, internal ricochet wall and embrasures protected by steel plates. It was siad to be in fair condition when it was visited in 1995-1996 in conjunction with the Defence of Britain project. (1) |
