Summary : A World War Two cantilevered pillbox at North Weald Airfield. The pillbox has a low domed circular roof 12 foot in diameter, flattened in the centre and supported by a circular pillar. There is a 360 degree embrasure, enabling an all-round field of fire. The pillbox is built of reinforced concrete, concrete, brick and steel components. The pillbox was probably constructed 1940-1941. The airfield is considered a key site partly because of its well preserved defensive landscape, of which this pillbox forms a part. |
