More information : A section of the Roman wall was investigated at Saltergate between Bank Street and the Falcon Inn in 1973. The wall was found to be surviving to a height of 2.25m and surmounted by a Mediaeval wall which survived to a further 1.5m high. A previously unsuspected Roman postern gate was also discovered, the west side of which was flanked by internal and external towers. The postern had been blocked when the Mediaeval wall was built. The section has been conserved and is scheduled. (1,2) |
