Summary : Established in 1851 as the home of the Broughton Cricket Club, the Yew Street cricket ground was for a few decaded a rival to Old Trafford as the focal point for Lancashire cricket. A bowls section was formed in the 1860s, followed by lacrosse in 1875. After purchasing Yew Street from the Clowes Estate in the 1920s, Broughton CC added sectoons for hockey and tennis, and after 1945, rugby union. But as members moved further out to the suburbs and debts rose, part of the ground was sold for housing, and the Victorian pavilion was replaced by a modern block with squash courts. Yew Street is now mainly known as the home of Broughton Rugby Union FC. |
