Summary : The site of Roman turret 49B, part of the defences on Hadrian's Wall. The excavated and consolidated masonry is visible on air photographs and was mapped as part of the English Heritage: Hadrian's Wall NMP project, and to sub-metre accuracy by Historic England for the 2017 English Heritage Trust's 'Hadrian's Wall: Birdoswald Sector Survey'.
More information : (NY 6113 6620) Turret (R) (Site of) (1) Turret 49B, seen by Bruce pre 1863 (2) when he reported that it was in a feeble condition. Subsequently it was lost, and rediscovered 381 yds west of the west rampart of Birdoswald fort in 1911 when it was excavated. Full Report & photos. (3) Now consolidated by D of E. Published survey (25") revised. (4) Scheduled. The turret at NY 6113 6620 is consolidated and under guardianship. (5-6) The structural masonry remains of the turret described by the previous authorities were seen centred at NY 6113 6620 on aerial photographs and mapped as part of the English Heritage: Hadrian's Wall NMP project. (7) Located on the English Heritage map of Hadrian's Wall 2010. (8) The turret is visible as a ruined building on air photographs and was mapped by Historic England as part of the English Heritage Trust's 'Hadrian's Wall: Birdoswald Sector Survey'. The full circuit of the tower foundations as visible, with an entrance in the south-west corner. Hadrian's Wall (1449984) is clearly constructed around the tower. (9)
