Summary : Possible post medieval trackway or Roman aqueduct is visible as earthworks on air photographs and was visited on the ground. A ditch with a bank on its down slope side extends for 220 metres. At its southern end, the bank and ditch are overlain by a post medieval field wall, but then it is truncated by some quarrying (see NY 66 NE 309, UID 1392024). At its northern end there is an area of wet ground and its alignment cannot be clearly seen in the long vegetation. Beyond this another feature may be associated with the bank and ditch and continue the alignment. It takes the form of a narrow ledge cut into a small knoll. The northern end reaches a north facing crag (Collar Heigh Crag), which shows evidence of quarrying activity. The features may relate to a trackway associated with this quarrying. Alternatively, as they follow the slope contour they may be the line of an aqueduct supplying water to Carvoran Fort (NY 66 NE 12, UID 13857). In an attempt to follow the contour towards a water source, a possible further section was found, but this would need verifying by ground survey as to whether it continues along the correct contour level. |
