More information : A World War Two Norcon pillbox (type CP/6/40/1 at Hawkinge Airfield, Hawkinge Kent, TR 207 390: it is thought to been moved from its original situation, and is now just inside the airfield boundary. The Defence of Britain record states that the concrete pillbox was built between 1940-1941. It was reported to be extant, but ex-situ and in bad condition in 1999 after a field visit connected with the Defence of Britain project. (1)
The Norcon pillbox, introduced in 1940, was a pre-cast concrete pipe with a diameter of 6 foot. They were 4 foot high. The walls were 4 inches thick and contained no steel, so sandbags were required for internal protection. They were provided with six loopholes for firing. (2) |
