Summary : A Second World War type 24 pillbox and an anti-aircraft battery emplacement at Hawkinge Airfield. The structures may have been built between 1940 and 1941 and are located inside the former military airfield's south-west boundary to the east of Gibraltar Lane. The pillbox is constructed of reinforced concrete: on its roof is an octagonal brick light anti-aircraft emplacement. These installations were said to be extant and in fair condition in 1999. |
More information : A pillbox and an anti-aircraft battery emplacement at Hawking Airfield (Hawking, Kent). They are of World War Two date the Defence of Britain Database record states that they were built between 1940 and 1941. They are located inside the former military airfield's south-west boundary to the east of Gibraltar Lane at TR 2080 3900. The type 24 pillbox is constructed of reinforced concrete: on its roof is an octagonal brick light anti-aircraft emplacement. These installations were reporteded to be extant and in fair condition in 1996 and 1999 after field visits in conjunction with the Defence of Britain project. (1) |
