Summary : Fort Number 24 of London's Civil War defences. Lithgow refers to a fort `at the back of Redrieff (Rotherhithe)', but otherwise does not describe it. Rocque's map does not give a clear indication of earthworks, but leaves enough clues to suggest that the fort was in Southwark Park. In the South-West corner of the park he shows an island surrounded by marshy ground, and he shows an irregularly shaped pond in the North-East corner. Unfortunately, spoil from the Rotherhithe Tunnel was dumped in the park, modifying the landscape. But there is a ridge running parallel to Jamaica Road pointing directly at the North-east corner which may be the remains of the rampart, and would place the fort in the North-East corner of the park. |
