Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 1395410

Hob Uid: 1395410
Location :
Greater London Authority
Southwark
Non Civil Parish
Grid Ref : TQ3360079000
Summary : Fort Number 23 of London's Civil War defences. Lithgow, who toured the South London defences in the early stages of their construction, does not mention any forts between the fort at Old Kent Road/New Kent Road and the Rotherhithe fort, but Defoe records a great fort near Bermondsey Church. Defoe's description of its location would place it at the junction of Grange Road and Spa Road, Bermondsey. Fort Place stood there until recent developments.
