Summary : The station offices and operations block at RAF Bicester technical site, built in 1926. It is situated close to the maiin gate to the technical site at the west end of the main axis through the site, facing the guardhouse (SP 52 SE 95). The 2-storey building is built of brick with a slate roof. The front (the north facing elevation) of the building features three bays in English bond; the outside bays have brick quoins, and the Western end bay projects very slightly. The middle bay is lower and has an open verandah to the front . To the rear the plan is irregular. The building has been described as "a well-preserved example of a configuration typical of bomber stations in the inter-war period" by an English Heritage report produced in May 2003. The report recommended that the building should be considered for possible future Listed Building status. |
More information : An English Heritage report produced in May 2003 recommended that Buildings 146 and 147 the "Station Offices and Operations Block" at RAF Bicester technical site should be considered for potential future Listed Building status at Grade II. It records that these elements of the base were built in 1926, and describes them as being "a well preserved example of a configuration typical of bomber stations in the inter-war period." The report notes the location as "sited at the main gate, facing the guardhouse across the main avenue". (1)
