Summary : A barracks building, formerly the sergeants' mess, at RAF Bicester (Defence Clothing and Textile Agency). This was built in 1924 and shows some possible inspiration from the Garden City style in its design. It was extended in 1935 and converted for use as a barracks in 1939 after the sergeants took over the former officers' mess in another building. |
More information : An English Heritage report produced in May 2003 suggested that the former sergeants' mess (building 31) was potentially suitable for listing at Grade II. It describes the building, built in 1924 thus: "sited North of the parade ground with some Garden City inspiration clear in its external treatment- such as the stacks and herringbone tympanae. Sergeants' messes were more affected by RAF personnel policy than any other building type, this example being extended at the mess end in 1935 and converted into barracks after the sergeants moved to the former officers' mess (Building 16) in 1939."
