Summary : The possible medieval inner gatehouse of Haughmond Abbey, surviving as earthworks. The medieval route leading from the north gate ends at a rectangular mound 0.5 metres in height. This is likely to be a building platform, and a 1777 estate map depicts a fairly large, rectangular structure in this location. The position suggests that this may have been a gatehouse leading into an inner court. Its survival as a feature mapped on the 1777 map indicates it was deliberately retained to serve as a formal entrance to the Barker family residence in the 16th-17th centuries. |

The survey, which covered an area of 19ha, was intended to inform the site's management and to put into context the findings of the small-scale excavations carried out between 1975 and 1979. For further details, see Archaeological Investigation Report AI/10/2003, which includes photographs, plans at various scales, interpretative diagrams and a full textual description and analysis. (1)
