Summary : Trackway, possibly medieval, surviving as an earthwork within the precinct of Haughmond Abbey. The route leads from the north gate, and survives as a slight holloway following the the foot of the escarpment. On the east side the rocky outcrops have been cut back to create a level passage, and on the west are the remains of a post-medieval field boundary wall. The track divides in two to the south, one fork continuing in a south-westerly direction, and the other to wards the north porch of the abbey church. However, the latter may in fact be the remanants of a track leading to an 18th century barn that formerly stood in the north-west corner of the cloister. The other fork ends west of the church and changes character to form a wide, rounded bank; probably forming the circa 1800 abbey carriage drive. However, this may have followed the medieval inner court boundary line. |

Between January and December 2002, English Heritage carried out a detailed analytical field survey of the environs of the standing buildings of Haughmond Abbey (Event record 1384572) (1). The survey, which covered an area of 19ha, was intended to inform the site's management and to put into context the findings of the small-scale excavations carried out between 1975 and 1979.
