Haughmond Abbey Fishpond

Hob Uid: 1384634
Location :
Shropshire
Uffington
Grid Ref : SJ5404015140
Summary : The site of a possible medieval fishpond, now dry, surviving as an earthwork within the precinct of Haughmond Abbey. The pond may have begun as a medieval fishpond, but the addition of ornamental bay windows to both the ground and first floors of the abbot's private rooms in circa 1500 suggests the possibility of views over a garden area. The pond may therefore have become an ornamental feature at this time. It may then subsequently have become part of the gardens associated with the Barker residence following the Dissolution.
More information : (SJ 5404 1514) Possible fishpond.
Between January and December 2002, English Heritage carried out a detailed analytical field survey of the environs of the standing buildings of Haughmond Abbey (Event record 1384572) (1). The survey, which covered an area of 19ha, was intended to inform the site's management and to put into context the findings of the small-scale excavations carried out between 1975 and 1979.

For further details, see Archaeological Investigation Report AI/10/2003, which includes photographs, plans at various scales, interpretative diagrams and a full textual description and analysis. (1)
