Type H Barrack Blocks

Hob Uid: 1384617
Location :
Oxfordshire
Cherwell
Caversfield
Grid Ref : SP5880324627
Summary : A group of two type "H" barrack blocks at RAF Bicester. They were built in 1939 as part of a project knon as "Scheme M". As the name of the barrack type suggests they are H shaped structures, built of brock with flat concrete roofs. They were considered an improvment on previous types, in terms of both domestic and defensive arrangements. In May 2003 they were recommended by an English Heritage report as being potentially suitable for listing at Grade II.
More information : The two Type H barrack block buildings (buildings 23 and 25) were included in an English Heritage Thematic Listing Programme report produced in May 2003. They were recommended as being potentially suitable for listing at Grade II. They were described as having been constructed in "1939, one of a group built as part of Scheme M. From 1938, and coinciding with Bulloch's replacement by P M Stratton, new buildings and stations...made increasing use of concrete and flat roofs in order to respectively speed up the building process and counter the effects of shrapnel and incendiary bombs. The planning of these barracks provided a direct response tio the demand for increased standards of accomodation on military airfields, including the provision of sitting rooms." (1)

Plan SP5824 and plan SP 5924. The H-block to the south west is centered at SP 5876 2458. The larger H-block to the north east is centered at SP 5882 2467. The current (2003) HSIS 1:10000 map depiction does not show the more southerly H-block. (2)

Listed at grade II. (3)
