Summary : The site of Roman turret 45B, part of the defences on Hadrian's Wall. Now destroyed by quarrying.
More information : [NY 6695 6607] Turret [G.S.] (Site of) Excavated AD 1883 (1) The western bite of Greenhead Quarry, has destroyed Turret 45B. (2) Fully excavated in 1883, it measured 12ft 10 N-S by 13ft 6 E-W within walls 3ft 2 thick and 3ft 6ft high. (3) No trace survives. (4) The turret has been destroyed by quarrying, the position given by the OS 25 inch map, 1921 has been accepted. (5) Buildings reference. (6) Located on the English Heritage map of Hadrian's Wall 2010. (7) Depiction : 'The turret uncovered on westernmost of Nine Nicks of Thirlwall, 1883'; part of the James Irwin Coates Archive. T45B was located in 1883, but destroyed soon after by the operations of the Greenland Quarry. (8)
