Summary : The site of the original Hillingdon station, opened on 10th December 1923 by the Metropolitan Railway to serve the new housing developments in the area. Renamed Hillingdon (Swakeleys) in 1934, the station comprised a small half-timbered ticket hut on the west side of Long Lane with waiting shelters on both platforms. As passenger numbers improved so the basic station facilities were improved, more so after a number of complaints rather than through necessity, and by 1931 the platforms had acquired canopies and the waiting shelters had been enclosed. Plans to realign the A40 Great Western Avenue in the 1980s required that the station be demolished and a completely new facility provided to the south. The station closed after the last train had ran on 5th December 1992 with the new station (see TQ 08 NE 45) opening the next day. |
