Summary : An abandoned underground station. The original Tower Hill underground station opened as Mark Lane on 6th October 1884, the final piece in the completion of the Inner Circle, or the Circle Line as it is known today. The station, which replaced the short-lived Tower of London station (see TQ 38 SW 2166), had its street level building replaced by a new booking hall incorporated into an office block in 1911. Renamed Tower Hill in 1946, the station proved to be too small to cope with the number of passengers and with no room for expansion, it was decided to build a new Tower Hill station a short distance to the east. The site chosen for the new station was that previously occupied by the Tower of London Station, and building work started in 1964. The present Tower Hill station opened on 5th February 1967, its predecessor closing after the last train had ran the previous night. The westbound platform was subsequently demolished to facilitate track alterations but the eastbound platform still remains. |
