Summary : The earthwork remains of the main gatehouse into the outer precinct of Haughmond Abbey. The site was first identified over 100 years ago, and recent historical research has also strengthened the argument for this as the location of the main approach to the abbey. The existing forest track is likely to represent the line of the medieval approach. The field retains the basic layout of the gate, but nothing is known about the building itself.
More information : (SJ 5422 1535) Probable gatehouse of Haughmond Abbey. Between January and December 2002, English Heritage carried out a detailed analytical field survey of the environs of the standing buildings of Haughmond Abbey (Event record 1384572) (1). The survey, which covered an area of 19ha, was intended to inform the site's management and to put into context the findings of the small-scale excavations carried out between 1975 and 1979.
