Summary : The Leeds and Thirsk Extension Railway (later renamed the Leeds Northern Railway) was approved in 1845-6. The route as applied for ran from Melmerby to Northallerton and along the West side of Yarm to Billingham. However, under pressure from George Hudson, the Melmerby-Northallerton section was withdrawn, Leeds and Thirsk trains using the Great Northern route from Thirsk to Northallerton. In 1848, authorisation was gained for the original route, and the Melmerby -Northallerton section was reinstated. Junctions were made with the Stockton and Hartlepool Railway at Billingham with the Stockton and Darlington Railway at Eaglescliffe, and with the Clarence Railway at Stockton. Opened in 1852. The Northallerton and Melmerby section closed in 1969 and the line was dismantled, the rest remaining open. |
