Summary : After opening of the southern section of the Great North of England Railway in 1841, (Linear 1477), the GNE found it financially inadvisable to continue with the northern section, and agreed to relinquish its powers to the Newcastle and Darlington Railway to complete the line, the line being completed in 1844. The original `old main line' ran from Darlington to Newcastle via Ferry, Shincliffe, Leamside, Penshaw, Washington, Pelaw and Gateshead. The present main line runs through Durham using the Team Valley Extension Railway.
