Summary : A Second World War type 24 pillbox forming part of the perimeter defences to RAF Cranage. The pillbox was constructed after the spring of 1940 and is of local design, hexagonal in plan, with an internal ricochet wall and stepped gun loopholes. The structure survives to a height of 2 metres, has a diameter of 7.2 metres, each of the walls are 3.8 metres in length. Construction is of brick and concrete. The entrance, entrance porch or blast wall are present on the north side. A field visit in 1996 found the structure extant and in a good condition. |
More information : Pillbox forming part of the wartime airfield defences to RAF Cranage constructed after the spring of 1940, It is of local design, hexagonal in plan, with an internal ricochet wall and stepped gun loopholes in each face giving a 360 degree range of fire. The structure survives to a height of 2 metres, has a diameter of 7.2 metres and each of the walls are 3.8 metres in length. Construction is of brick and concrete.
