| Summary : A section of Roman road shows as earthwork and cropmark on aerial photographs at Warcop. Part of it survives as an earthwork terrace in a roadside verge along the A66. It continues as a cropmark in the adjacent field as four fragmentary parallel lines, which represent the outer marking out ditches and inner roadside ditches. At its extreme east end the cropmark lines show the beginnings of a realignment to the north-east. Previously it was believed the road had continued eastward to connect with the A66 once more, near to Walk Mill High Bridge. |
| More information : A section of Roman road, forming part of the Scotch Corner to Brougham road (Linear 301) is recorded as an earthwork and cropmark at Warcop. A section survives as an earthwork terrace in a roadside verge along the A66 between NY7394 1678 and NY 7401 1675. It continues as a cropmark in the adjacent field between NY 7401 1675 and NY 1675 7419, as four fragmentary parallel lines, which represent the outer marking out ditches and inner roadside ditches. At its extreme east end the cropmark lines show the beginnings of a realignment to the north-east. Prieviously it was believed the road had continued eastward to connect with the A66 once more, near to Walk Mill High Bridge. (1) |
