Summary : This branch line was authorised in 1865 between Trent and Weston -on-Trent, but even as it was being built, an extension from Weston to Stenson Junction on the Birmingham and Derby Junction Railway was granted, thus creating a useful Derby `avoiding' line. The Trent - Weston section opened in 1869 and the extension in 1873. Although the line could not sustain local passenger traffic beyond 1930, it remained useful for excursion traffic and as a diversionary route. It remains an important freight route.
