Location :
North Yorkshire

Summary : Medieval field system associated with Wharram Percy. The deserted medieval village was surrounded by open fields of broad ridge and furrow, comprising ridges c.10m wide in a reverse-S pattern. Most of this has been ploughed away over the course of the second half of the C20th and is now only visible on early aerial photographs, but a few isolated fragments survive within the Scheduled area beyond the limit of modern cultivation: on the S side of Drue Dale (SE 8560 6395); on the E side of Deep Dale at the point where it joins Drue Dale, where the ridges closest to the lip of the valley take the form of lynchets running along the contour (SE 8589 6407); in the NW corner of the Scheduled area (SE 8575 6456). Much of the remainder has ben acurately plotted from aerial photographs as part of the Wharram Percy Research Project.
More information : SE 8583 6436 (FCE) Field system.
In June and July 2002, English Heritage carried out a detailed investigation and field survey of Wharram Percy and its environs following a request from Dr Stuart Wrathmell, in order to underpin the completion of a synoptic publication of the long-running Wharram Percy Research Project.

A number of associated and earlier monuments previously described as part of the entry for the medieval village were allocated new records.

The Level 3 report on the investigation, which includes full textual description and analysis, plans at various scales, photographs and interpretative drawings, is available through the NMR. (1)
