More information : (NY 6622 2180) Sandstone altar, 15" x 30" built into the north-east end of Crackenthorpe Hall, on the right or west side of the Machell coat-of-arms. Most of the text has weathered away, but line 3 reads:- VSLM - u(otum) s(oluit) l(ibens) m(erito). (1) The coat of arms and two Roman altars, of which the above is one, were prob. built in by Hugh Machell and his brother Thomas Machell, the antiquary, in 1685; presumably the altars came from Kirkby Thore fort (See NY 62 NW 5). The altar on the left or east side has no extant lettering. (2)
