Hob Uid: 13603
Location :
Cumbria

Grid Ref : NY6823021700
Summary : A Roman milestone was found in 1694. It is now in Tullie House Museum.
More information : 1. [Area centred NY 68232170]

Hubner 1 lists a Ro milestone of Philip "'dug out of the military
way 1694, now at Hangingshaw' (prope Old Carlisle)". He cites Hayton
as his authority and wonders how the stone ever got to Appleby.
Haverfield (2) points out that
a. the true authority is not Hayton, but a MS note added by Gough to
his copy of Hayton's catalogue of the Bainbridge collection at
Appleby, and there is no need to suppose the stone ever was in the
collection;
b. Hangingshaw is nowhere near Old Carlisle, but is near Appleby.

Haverfield suggested it might be a bad transcription of another
milestone of Philip which did come from Old Carlisle
[viz NY 24 NE 2], but he does not repeat the suggestion in (3),
where he records the rediscovery of the stone in 1914 by Percival
Ross, built into a wall of Hangingshaw Farm.
Haverfield's text is:
IMP CAE
SARIMARCO

ETMIVLPHILIPPO
NOBILISSIMO

Milestone now in Tullie House Museum, Carlisle. (1-3)
