Location :
Cumbria
Eden
Appleby-in-Westmorland
Grid Ref : NY6842020770
Summary : Site of Carmelite Friary, founded c1290-3 AD, dissolved 1539.
More information : (NY 6842 2077) The Friary on site of (NAT) Friary (NR). (1)

A house of Carmelite Friars was founded in Appleby before 1300 and dissolved, probably in 1539. (Whellan (2a) states it existed till 1543). (2)

Some confirmation of the siting is given by Nicholson & Burn, who refer to a house on the W side of Battlebarrow "built out of the ruins of an ancient friary that stood behind the opposite row of houses." (3)

A barn at "The Friary" has part of a 14th C window in the S end. (4)

Based on the work of Egan, dates for a Carmelite Friary (Whitefriars) in Appleby-in-Westmorland are suggested as foundation in c1290-3 and sissolution in 1539 (see p233).
Further details, from p234: "APPLEBY. At the N. end of Bondgate; fd. by Lords Vescy, Percy, and Clifford in 1281, according to Speed: Mon.; r. c. 1290-3: Egan, who states that there were 12 friars here in 1300, and that the friary was suppressed in 1539. cf. AC, 71." (5)
