Summary : The earthwork and buried remains of a Medieval ringwork situated 90 metres east of Plowden Mill above the southern valley side of the River Onny. The ringwork is rectangular in plan and defined by a ditch on southern and eastern sides. The spoil excavated from the ditch has been used to create a steep flat topped mound and along its south and east sides are the remains of an earthen bank. Within the interior are a series of undulations, possibly marking the remains of former buildings. This feature was recorded earlier as SO 38 NE 18. Scheduled. |
More information : The earthwork and buried remains of a Medieval ringwork situated 90 metres east of Plowden Mill above the southern valley side of the River Onny. The ringwork is rectangular in plan measuring 42 metres north to south by 47 metres east to west and defined by a ditch on southern and eastern sides. The spoil excavated from the ditch has been used to create a steep flat topped mound and along its south and east sides are the remains of an earthen bank. Within the interior are a series of undulations, possibly marking the remains of former buildings. Scheduled.(1)
This feature was recorded earlier as SO 38 NE 18. The platform and ditch are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs and have been mapped by RCHME's Marches Uplands Mapping Project. (2)
The feature was previously thought to have been a homestead enclosure and was recorded as such under SO 18 NE 18 (now deleted and all references transferred to this record). When surveyed in 1973 the bank rose 1.8 metre above the enclosed area and 3.7 metres above the bottom of the 1.6 metre deep ditch. The enclosed area measured 25 metres E-W and by 20 metres transversely.(3) |
