THE GOLDEN STONE

DESCRIPTION + /

A large rectangular boulder, known as the Golden Stone, located in a field bank on the north side of the road to Edge House Farm. It served as a boundary marker for the late medieval estates of the Stanley and De Trafford familes amd is one of the 'merestones' recorded in the Perambulation of May 1598. The stone has been deliberately split apart at some point and bears evidence of an attempt to destroy it by blasting. Scheduled.
