Summary : Stable block (30 yards south of Wherwell Priory). One of the surving Abbey buildings, built as an open hall in the second half of the 13th century, and either a hall of the Abbess or an infirmary. The roof has been dendrochronologically dated to 1250 and 1280. The building was altered in the 17th, 18th, late 19th and 20th centuries and is now in use as garages, stores and workshops. The building is of banded flint and brick, with some chalk blocks, brick dressings and a plain tile roof. Originally the building consisted of a large open hall but a loft floor was inserted as part of the 19th century alterations, the single storey, three bay, brick extension was also added at this time. |
