More information : NZ 0642 1507 (approximite location)
The crinoidal limestone on the banks of the River Tees was quarried during the medieval period. The nearest quarry to Egglestone Abbey was Abbey Quarry in area NZ 0642 1507. It belonged to the Abbot until the Dissolution and is likely to be the quarry mentioned as being in use again during the early eighteenth century. (1)
The site of this quarry lay beyond the limits of English Heritage's archaeological investigation of the fields around Egglestone Abbey, undertaken during November 2000. The quarry was, therefore, not examined to see what, if anything, survives. However, it is mentioned in the Survey Report - 'The Medieval and Later Landscape at Egglestone Abbey, Teesdale, County Durham' - which contains the results of this investigation. (2) |
