Summary : Leper hospital at West Somerton founded between 1180 and 1189 by Ralph de Granville, dedicated to St Leonard and granted to Butley Priory but later taken into Crown custody. In 1397 only four lepers remained and the hospital was "desolate" in 1399 and re-granted to the Priory.
More information : (TG 47561970) Hospital (NR) (Site of) (1) Leper hospital at West Somerton founded between 1180 and 1189 by Ralph de Granville, dedicated to St Leonard and granted to Butley Priory but later taken into Crown custody. In 1397 only four lepers remained and the hospital was "desolate" in 1399 and re-granted to the Priory. (2, 3) There are no remains or indications of a former building at the published site. The area is now used as a pony training ring. Tithe/estate maps inspected; no field name evidence found. (4) The National Grid Reference for the site is: TG47561970 (5)
