At this time the north tower was also added. The church is made from coursed sandstone rubble and has slate roofs. It consists of a nave, a chancel, a south transept and a north tower. There is a decorated five bay arcade which may have been reconstructed in 1885. The church has timber roofs, with arch braced collars to the nave. The north door is Saxon. More information : (NY 68851989) St Michael's Church (NAT) (1)

Much altered and rebuilt at various dates, but the lower parts of the N and W walls of the nave are of so different a character from that of the Norman work standing upon them that they are considered to be probably AS. Also, the early Norman N doorway, now blocked, has as its lintel a re-used AS hogback, still fairly well preserved internally. (2)

St Michaels's Church, Bongate was declared redundant in July 1974 and is to become a 'Craft Workshop'. Scheduled. (3)
