Much altered and rebuilt at various dates, but the lower parts of the N and W walls of the nave are of so different a character from that of the Norman work standing upon them that they are considered to be probably AS. Also, the early Norman N doorway, now blocked, has as its lintel a re-used AS hogback, still fairly well preserved internally. (2)
St Michaels's Church, Bongate was declared redundant in July 1974 and is to become a 'Craft Workshop'. Scheduled. (3)
Church of St Michael. Saxon fragments, 13th century south door, 14th century south arcade and transept. Much restored by Lady anne Clifford in 1659. Restored again and north tower added in 1885. Grade 2*. (4)
Full description of the 10th century hogback stone used as a lintel to the blocked doorway at the west end of the north wall of the church. (5) |
