More information : (TG 23540830) Site of PRIORY (NR) (Austin Friars, Founded c. AD 1272)
The Austin Friars came to Norwich and settled on a messuage provided by Roger Mingot about 1272; although it appears that the house did not exist in 1277, but by 1289 it had 13-15 members. In 1293 they increased their land holding by obtaining a licence to accept 5 tenements which they demolished to enlarge their own house, and in 1348 they acquired St. Michael Conesford (TG 20 NW 296). On their much enlarged site the friars proceeded to build a fine church with a cloister on the south side. It was dissolved on 29 August 1538.
TG 23550825. Excavations on the site of the Austin friary at King Street/Synagogue Street in 1968, revealed substantial walls. A late building phase, with at least 2 tiled floor levels belongs to the monastic period, while earlier walls, equally substantial, probably represent St. Michael's Church. A brick lined tomb was located. Two phases of domestic buildings were found north of the conventual church. The development led to the total destruction of the monument. |
