Summary : A cairn, one of around 80 similar features on Ramsley Moor (see SK 27 NE 80). Excavated in 1964 by Sheffield University Dept. of Ancient History (they excavated one of a pair of features, either cairn 56 or 57 - it is not clear which), it is apparently not prehistoric in date. It was described as a man-made circular feature consisting of a circular arrangement of large stones, internal diameter circa 10 metres. The central area was slightly scooped out. No artefacts were found, and the purpose of the structure is unknown. |
