Summary : Medieval house, now educational institute and sports centre. The two storey building is probably early 17th century in date, but stands over the remains of an early 12th century house, set at right angles to the street. These remains comprise a 5-bay, stone-built undercroft, divided into two compartments with a spiral stair in the north east corner. A single aisled open hall was added circa 1175 on the site of the present 17th century house. Circa 1480 the aisle was demolished and a brick undercroft constructed. |
More information : (TG 23640804) MUSIC HOUSE (NR) (PH) 12th century and later. The left section was a 12th century Jew's House. There have been various owners and in 1633 it was the city house of Lord Chief Justice Coke. The facade is mainly 17th century. 2 storeys with attics. Brick and flint rubble with stone dressings, 2 gables. The interior was a 12th century vaulted undercroft. Grade 1. A private residence and also used as offices. Known as Music House.
