Summary : There are references to 3 houses of the Pied Friars in Norwich between 1253 and 1290. In 1253, the prior and brethren are documented at the church of St Martin in the Baile. In 1256 they are documented as at onisford, and in 1274-5 they are documented on this site on the South side of St Julian's churchyard, and the east end abutted the street. They continued until the Black Death of 1349 when they perished, and their house became private property. |
More information : (TG 23550810) FRIARS' DE DOMINA (NR) (Site of) The friars of the order of our Lady, called Fratres de Domina, were a sort of begging friars, and had their beginning about 1288. Their house stood on the south side of St. Julian's churchyard, and the east end abutted the street. They continued until the Black Death of 1349 when they perished, and their house became private property. The Friars de Domina are in reality Pied Friars under an alternative name (4).
