Summary : Friary founded by 1290, situated at St Peter Mountergate. It was converted during the early 14th century into a chantry. The friar's house was apparently situated at the North-East corner of the churchyard. After the order was disbanded, and the friars obliged to join one of the four principal orders of friars, the site was granted to the hospital of Beck in Billingford. The master of this hospital converted it into the chantry which survived until the dissolution. |
More information : (TG 23400840) PIED FRIARS' COLLEGE (NR) (Site of) The Pied Friars are said (a) to have had a house at the north east corner of the churchyard of St. Peter Mountergate (St Peter Parmentergate). After the friars were obliged to join one of the four principal orders of mendicants (c1307?), it was granted to the hospital of Bek in Billingford (TG 02 SW 6) whose master made it into his city house and converted it into a chantry for apparently 24 secular priests who lived in colegiate manner until the dissolution.
